Gabrielle Deeny

I’m a writer and director - working across narrative film, TV and documentaries.

I have an extensive background in factual television - such as my time at the BBC and Rare TV. Currently I am working in the animation industry, at Brown Bag Films.

I studied Art at the Dun Laoghaire Institute Of Art Design + Technology - where my Bachelor's degree graduate project was nominated for an RDS Visual Art Award. Following my time there I went on to study a Master’s in Queen's University, Belfast. My final project there, ”Family Spirit”, went on to numerous film festivals and won the best screenplay award at the Dublin University Film Festival.

After college as I began to work in factual TV, I directed my first funded documentary for the BBC 2-minute Masterpiece in 2018. The piece, entitled “And You Asked Me”, tells the real story of a couple who met in the dance halls of 1960s Belfast.

Recently I directed a Northern Ireland Screen-funded short, "Life Ruiner", through the New Shorts Focus Scheme. The comedy film has just finished post-production with Poli Productions and will start its festival run soon. This year I was selected as one of the members for GALPAL Collective's first Writers Club in 2024. I am currently in development with Cassette Vision on producing a feature documentary on the Irish Amputee Football Team.
